Dangriga, Belize
The project focused on the relationship between collective historical memory and current issues of ecological sustainability. Through the assistance of our hosts, the Hernandez Family, and by establishing relationships with POWA(local NGO for the empowerment of women and aids prevention), Dance Garifuna (UNICEF sponsored program to preserve the language and culture of the Garifuna), and the Agricultural Council of Belize, we conducted extensive interviews, toured relevant sites, sponsored related art workshops, and hosted an open solutions forum. An exhibition will be on display at the Cooper Union, NYC in November 2008, including architectural plans for a possible community workshop space.
Summer 2008 Participating Artists: Nia K. Evans, Tomashi Jackson, Linday Willemain, Omar Jackson, Zoë McCloskey. Sponsors: Benjamin Menshel Fellowship, Felicia and Eugene Hernandez
